HTC Droid Incredible Officially Lands on Verizon April 29

After months of leaked specs, photos and rumors, the HTC Droid Incredible will officially come to Verizon on April 29 for $200 with a two-year contract. Not to be confused with the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris, also both on Verizon, the Droid Incredible runs Android 2.1 with HTC’s updated Sense user interface. And with a 3.7-inch display WVGA AMOLED display, slim design and 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the Droid Incredible might make some Droid owners envious.

RUMOR: HTC INCREDIBLE TO REPLACE DROID ERIS AT VERIZON?

According to a reliable source at Berryscoop, the HTC Incredible will be replacing the HTC Droid Eris at Verizon Wireless.

April 1st is the rumored launch date of the Incredible and the Eris’s product life is expected to end on the same day.

Droid Eris Getting an OTA Update

Verizon stated that today they started the over-the-air (OTA) pushing process for all HTC Droid Eris users.
The main improvements and updates are:

While on a call and the device is in screensaver mode, pressing the End key now takes the device out of screensaver mode, and a second press will end the call.
On-call mute and speakerphone icon functionality is enhanced.
Upgraded functionality after activation eliminates the delay users were experiencing in receiving their first call.
Device now switches effectively from 1x mode to 3G.
Device no longer requires users to reselect a default email after power-cycling.
SMS and MMS messaging delivery is improved.
Eighty-character MMS/SMS message subject lines are now allowed.
Improved picture messaging functionality allows messages from LG phones to be opened

HTC says Hero and DROID ERIS will receive Android 2.1 update, new Sense UI

HTC said today that it will update the GSM Hero, Sprint Hero, and Verizon Wireless DROID ERIS to the latest Android 2.1 operating system. The update will also include HTC’s new Sense user interface which adds a host of new features, including improvements in social networking, multitouch, and user interface updates. Android 2.1 due December 11th?

Google may be launching Android 2.1 just a month after 2.0, a combination of rumors suggests. Along with an update to Android’s terms of service, info obtained by AndroidAndMe suggests the firmware will be available the same day. It also follows a makeover of the Android.com website that usually precedes wider availability of a new Android release.
The 2.1 update will be less dramatic an upgrade to Android 2.0 but should still address some of the problems that have hurt Android development versus the relatively streamlined iPhone App Store experience. If accurate, customers would see a redesigned Android Market with the option billing directly through their carrier instead of the more problematic Google Checkout. Handset owners could also shop from the web on a computer instead of having to download apps from third-party sites or a smartphone’s native store portal.

The revision would ship for “select devices” sometime after December 11th and could come to the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris in an over-the-air update. The HTC Hero may also skip directly to 2.1 from its older Android 1.5 revision

HTC Droid Eris (Verizon Wireless) Review

Laptop Mag has a review of the HTC Droid Eris. Here are some of the highlights:
3.5/5 stars.

The $99.99 (with two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate) Droid Eris is the smart phone for Verizon Wireless customers who are looking for something more pocket friendly and affordable than the Motorola Droid. While the Eris doesn’t have the latest Android 2.0 operating system or that other Droid’s high-resolution display, you get the intuitive Sense user interface and very good Facebook and Twitter integration. Add in a rock solid industrial design and a first-class Web browser (complete with multitouch support), and you have one of the best smart phones under $100. However, the Eris is not necessarily a better deal than its $179 cousin on Sprint.

Verdict:

The HTC Droid Eris has a lot going for it. We love its Sense user interface and slick design. Assuming you don’t need a hardware keyboard, the Eris is a better choice than the Motorola Droid for those who want to travel light. If you’re already on Verizon, the Eris is the carrier’s best smart phone under $100. However, if your contract is up (or almost up) the HTC Hero on Sprint is an even better deal.

If the Motorola Droid is too much and too expensive an Android phone for you, Verizon now offers an entry level Android phone, the HTC Droid Eris, for half the price ($99 with contract and post-rebate). Even though oddly named for the Greek god of strife, Eris provides anything but. Essentially a slightly spruced-up version of the HTC Hero from Sprint, Eris is a quick powerhouse packed with a 5 MP camera, WiFi and visual voicemail, and offers seven home screens, four more than the more expensive Droid.

Verizon took its sweet time jumping into the Android marketplace, but the carrier has quickly jumped into the fore of Andoid phone suppliers. Eris is an excellent and inexpensive Introduction to Android for its subscribers looking for an iPhone alternative. While its short battery life is annoying, Eris is an outstanding phone in every other way.

Video Hands On: the Verizon HTC Droid Eris

Essentially a rebranded version of Sprint’s HTC Hero, the Eris (see it in action in the above video) goes on sale today, but for $99 ($100 less than Motorola Droid handset).

The Eris runs Android 1.5, features a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, and a 528-MHz Qualcomm processor (less powerful than the Motorola’s ARM Cortex-A8)

It comes as little surprise given we’ve already seen it unboxed and know the pricing, but Verizon Wireless have officially announced that, as of tomorrow, they’ll be offering the DROID Eris by HTC. Basically another version of the HTC Hero, the HTC DROID Eris packs a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, EVDO Rev.A and the HTC Sense UI.

There’s also a microSD slot – Verizon are popping in an 8GB card as standard – and both GPS and a digital compass. The browser gets Flash Lite for in-page video streaming and there’s all the usual Gmail, Google Maps and other standard Android applications. No Google Maps Navigation, however, as the DROID Eris – unlike the Motorola DROID – doesn’t come with Android 2.0.

As we’ve already heard, it’s the pricing that makes the HTC DROID Eris something of a bargain. Verizon have priced at it at $99.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) and presuming a new, two-year agreement.

Verizon Droid Eris Priced At $99 With HTC Hero Specs

Manufactured by HTC (and also known as the HTC Desire), the HTC Droid Eris is widely tipped to be the second Android phone to launch on the Verizon Wireless network.

Apparently planned for a November 6th launch alongside the Verizon Motorola Droid, the Droid Eris has somewhat underwhelming specs in comparison to the Moto Droid.

Whilst the exact specs of the Droid Eris are still unknown, the latest batch of leaks reveals that the handset will run Android 1.6 and will feature 528MHz Qualcomm CPU. The Droid Eris also includes a 5 mega-pixel camera, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Latest reports also suggest that the handset will be priced at just $99, which when compared with the HTC Hero ($180 on Sprint for 2-year contract) seems like a good deal.

The HTC Droid Eris does ofcourse feature the HTC Sense custom Android interface.
